2 sourcesThe UK government has committed £33 million to a dementia clinical trials partnership co-funded by Bristol Myers Squibb, GSK and Gates Ventures, bringing the total to £48 million. Prime Minister Andy Burnham also confirmed at the Innovation Nation Summit in Manchester on 9 October 2026 that dementia will be one of the first priorities of the new Health Data Research Service (HDRS) 12.
What was announced
The government money flows through the Dame Barbara Windsor Dementia Goals programme to The BARBARA Alliance, a UK-wide not-for-profit partnership of government, industry, academia, charities and people with lived experience of dementia 1. Its main programme, BARBARA, is meant to build one co-ordinated platform that links the UK's health data, research and clinical trial capabilities, so that researchers can find participants more easily 1. The target is recruitment, which the government describes as one of the largest barriers in dementia research 1.
HDRS is backed by up to £600 million from the government and the Wellcome Trust 1. It will pull NHS and research data from across the UK into a single secure system for approved research, and scientists will be able to identify eligible patients and recruit them faster 1. The government presents the two schemes as complementary: BARBARA to widen trial participation, HDRS to give researchers the evidence to design studies 1.
Bristol Myers Squibb put the data at the centre of its interest. "By bringing together unique datasets that advance AI/ML approaches, BARBARA will help the Alzheimer’s field ask better questions," said Ken Rhodes, its vice president of neuroscience research 1. Niranjan Bose of Gates Ventures called recruitment "one of the biggest bottlenecks" in developing treatments for Alzheimer's and other dementias 1.
What it means for the market
For drug developers, the offer is a national route to trial participants and linked NHS data in a disease area where, the government says, too few people take part in research 1. Alzheimer's Research UK, whose chief executive chairs the Dementia Goals programme, said more than 90% of people it surveyed wanted to take part in research 1. For NHS organisations and data suppliers, dementia now sits near the front of the queue for HDRS, a flagship commitment of the 10 Year Health Plan and the Life Sciences Sector Plan 1.
The scale of the problem frames the spending. Nearly one million people in the UK live with dementia, and the condition is estimated to cost the UK more than £42 billion a year, of which £7 billion falls on the NHS and most of the rest on social care and unpaid family care 1.
The package follows UKRI's £80 million Dementia Challenge, launched the previous week, which will test nine technologies in the NHS, including faster MRI brain scans and remote cognitive assessments 1. That programme aims for 92% of people to be diagnosed within 18 weeks of referral, against around 60% today 1. In the same speech, Burnham said the Regulatory Innovation Office would gain "sandboxing powers" to suspend rules temporarily so that innovators can test ideas 2.
Caveats
The announcement does not say how much each company is contributing, when the BARBARA platform will be operational, or which datasets HDRS will open first for dementia research 1. The government also linked the funding to its plans for a National Care Service, whose timing depends on a review by Baroness Casey, who has been asked to recommend how and when to build it 1.
