The Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England said on 18 October 2026 that almost £140 million will go into 14 urgent care schemes across England, and that 25 new or expanded urgent care sites announced in April will be open for winter 1. Two of the 14 schemes are digital projects, one for emergency departments across London and one for hospital capacity coordination at Addenbrooke's 1.

Where the money goes

Most of the package is buildings, beds and vehicles. The largest single scheme is £42.1 million to rebuild the A&E at Queen's Hospital, Romford, which was designed for about 325 patients a day and now often treats more than twice that number 1. Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham receives £12.9 million for a new same day emergency care (SDEC) unit, and a replacement ambulance hub in Shrewsbury gets £12 million 1. East Midlands Ambulance Service receives £6.35 million for 40 additional double-crewed ambulances, and James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston gets £10 million for a new urgent treatment centre 1.

The digital spending sits in two schemes:

  • £18.4 million over three years for digital systems in emergency departments across London, covering digital check-in and triage tools meant to identify patients' needs earlier and send them to the right service 1.
  • £7.7 million over four years at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge to develop a coordination centre for real-time management of beds, discharges and urgent admissions 1.

The Romford rebuild also includes enhanced digital systems as part of the new department, though the release does not split out that element 1.

Of the 25 sites carried over from April, the release lists new urgent treatment centres at Southampton General (expected November 2026) and at Salisbury, Royal Hampshire County and North Middlesex (all expected December 2026), with SDEC expansions at Mid Yorkshire and Royal Devon due in January 2027 1. Many of the others are already open 1.

What it means for the market

For suppliers of emergency department software, digital front doors and capacity management systems, the two digital schemes are a direct signal of what NHS capital is being spent on this winter. London's £18.4 million is a pan-London programme rather than a single trust purchase, and its stated aim is earlier identification of need and better patient flow 1. The Addenbrooke's award points to continued investment in command or coordination centres that track beds and discharges in real time 1.

The scale is modest against the wider capital plan. The government says it is investing almost £2 billion in urgent care capital projects until 2030, on top of £1.5 billion confirmed so far for urgent maintenance across the NHS estate 1.

Alongside the capital, the government pointed to an expanded Pharmacy First scheme and extra GP appointments in evenings, at weekends and out of hours during winter, and said the NHS is rolling out digital tools to make flu vaccine booking simpler for parents, schools and vaccination teams 1. More than 7.4 million flu vaccinations had been given in England by 11 October 1.

Health and Social Care Secretary Yvette Cooper said winter "will be more challenging for our NHS this year, after such a heavy summer" 1. Sir Ciarán Devane, chief executive of the NHS Alliance, welcomed the investment and said the priority should be relieving hospitals, improving flow and helping more people get care nearer home or go home sooner 1.

Caveats

The announcement is a government press release. It names the schemes and sums but gives no procurement routes, supplier names or timelines for the digital projects, and it sets no measurable targets for waiting times or flow 1. The London and Addenbrooke's money is spread over three and four years, so only part of it will be spent this winter 1. Several of the April schemes are not due to open until November 2026 to January 2027, after winter pressure has begun 1.
